Challenge Yourself Scholarship

Introduction
Attorney Greg Gold and the Colorado legal team at The Gold Law Firm are pleased to offer The Gold Law Firm Challenge Yourself Scholarship in memory of Kevin Maez (1986–2022). Each semester we award five scholarships of $1,000 apiece to first-time college freshmen who reside in the United States. Scholarship payments will be sent directly to the recipients’ college financial aid offices.
About Kevin Maez
Kevin Maez lived a life defined by perseverance and hard work. After leaving high school early, he earned his GED and went on to complete an associate’s degree in computer science. Kevin built a career in computer services, working for the State of Colorado and the RTD. His life was tragically cut short on May 13, 2022, when he was struck by a careless driver while commuting to work. To honor his determination and the positive example he set, The Gold Law Firm created this scholarship to support students who demonstrate similar grit and ambition.
Scholarship Focus
This scholarship is designed for incoming college freshmen who have participated in skill-building activities such as Scouts, acting/theatre, debate club, or speech. We believe sustained involvement in these pursuits helps develop leadership, confidence, responsibility, and resilience—qualities Kevin exemplified. Through this program we aim to help students who actively work to grow both inside and outside the classroom.
Eligibility
- Must be an incoming, first-time college freshman planning to attend or already enrolled at an accredited U.S. college or university.
- Must have participated in one or more of the following during childhood or high school: Scouts; Acting/Theatre; Debate Club; Speech.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be at least 17 years old at the time of application.
Application Requirements (Fall 2026)
To be eligible for the Fall 2026 awards, applicants must submit:
- An essay of approximately 500 words responding to the prompt:
How has involvement in activities such as Scouts, acting, debate, and/or speech helped you navigate difficult times, develop leadership, or prepare you for future success?
- At least one image embedded within the essay to support your message (we value visual elements as an important part of communication).
- Contact information.
- Proof of upcoming-semester enrollment (acceptable: class schedule, acceptance letter, or current transcript).
