Tarrant County Mental Health Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Mental Health America of Greater Tarrant County
Introduction
Mental Health America of Greater Tarrant County (MHATC) offers scholarships to students from Tarrant County who are pursuing careers in mental health and wellness. Awards are made each semester (one scholarship per semester), and the program honors the donors and memorials that helped establish it.

Administration
Applications are reviewed and awards are decided by the MHATC Board and its Scholarship Committee.
Important Dates
- Application Deadlines:
- Fall term: June 15
- Spring term: November 15
- Summer term: March 15
- Award Notifications:
- Fall term recipients notified by July 15
- Spring term recipients notified by December 15
- Summer term recipients notified by April 15
Who Is Eligible
Applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen and live in Tarrant County
- Be in good academic standing at their college/university
- Be enrolled in coursework or have a declared degree plan in fields related to mental/behavioral health (examples include psychology, social work, psychiatry/mental/behavioral health, social and behavioral sciences, behavioral/cognitive neuroscience, mental health or rehabilitative counseling, nursing with a mental health focus, cognitive development, etc.)
- Have a preferred GPA of 3.0; however, strong candidates with lower GPAs will be considered
Application Requirements
Include the following in your submission:
1. A 200–400 word essay describing any personal, professional, academic, or volunteer experience with mental or behavioral health issues (including addiction) and how those experiences have influenced your life and/or career direction.
2. A 100–200 word statement outlining your goals and how you intend to use the knowledge gained through this scholarship opportunity.
Submission Format
Your email application should contain:
- Date, full name, contact information, and city of residence
- Current coursework relevant to this scholarship and declared degree
- The essay, the goals statement, and your current GPA in the body of the email

How Applications Are Evaluated
Selection is based on:
- Residency in Tarrant County
- Quality of the essay: clear writing without grammatical errors; evidence of thoughtful decision-making; demonstration of empathy and compassion; realistic lessons learned; and plausible application of knowledge
- Relevance of coursework and declared degree to the scholarship’s focus
- Academic performance (3.0 GPA preferred, although outstanding applications with lower GPAs may be considered)
Award Amounts
- Fall and Spring recipients may receive awards up to $5,000.
- Summer recipients may receive awards up to $2,000.
