Overview The Minnesota Power Foundation’s Positively Powerful Scholarship Fund awards need-based scholarships to students from Minnesota Power’s service area who demonstrate integrity, strong academic performance, and perseverance. The program aims to reduce financial obstacles to postsecondary education while supporting a thriving, diverse talent pool across northeast and central Minnesota. Who is eligible - Must be a graduate of a Minnesota high school within the Minnesota Power service area and currently live in one of these counties: Aitkin, Benton, Carlton, Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Morrison, Otter Tail, Pine, St. Louis, Stearns, Todd, or Wadena. - Must be pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in one of these areas: Accounting, Business, Economics, Education (Math & Science), Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or Technology. Applicants working toward an AA or AS in Business or other STEM-related fields are also eligible. - Must enroll at one of the following institutions: Central Lakes College; College of St. Scholastica; Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College; Hibbing Community College; Iron Range Engineering; Itasca Community College; Lake Superior College; Leech Lake Tribal College; Mesabi Range College; Rainy River Community College; University of Minnesota Duluth; or Vermilion Community College. - Must demonstrate financial need, with an expected family contribution (EFC) no greater than $25,000. - Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and be able to show evidence of grit and perseverance. Award amounts Scholarships range from $1,500 to $2,500 per year and may be renewed for up to two years, for a total award between $3,000 and $5,000. Application process and cycle - Grant cycle: Universal Application - Applications open: December 1, 2025 - Application deadline: February 24, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Notifications and payment schedule - Award notifications will be sent by email by May 1, 2026. - Scholarship disbursements to institutions: Fall semester payments by July 30, 2026; Spring semester payments by December 30, 2026. Tax guidance Recipients are advised to consult a tax professional about the tax treatment of scholarships. Per IRS guidance, scholarship and fellowship amounts are generally tax-free only if: (1) you are a degree candidate at an educational institution that maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and a normally enrolled student body, and (2) the funds are used for tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance, or for required course-related fees, books, supplies, and equipment.
