Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunities

Overview
ASM’s Undergraduate Scholarship Program supports students pursuing studies in metallurgy, materials science, and closely related engineering fields. The program is managed by the ASM Action in Education Committee and is governed by the application rules below. Application materials must be submitted by February 28.

Available Scholarships
- George A. Roberts Scholarships — Up to seven awards of $6,000 each. Founded in 1995 through a gift from Dr. George A. Roberts, former ASM president and retired Teledyne CEO, to promote education in materials science and engineering.
- Lucille & Charles A. Wert Scholarship — One-year tuition award up to $10,000. Created in 2006 from the bequest of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Wert.
- William Park Woodside Founder’s Scholarship — One-year tuition award up to $10,000. Established in 1996 by Sue Woodside Shulec in memory of her grandfather William Park Woodside, whose leadership contributed to the founding of ASM International.
- Acta Materialia Scholarships — Two awards of $5,000 each. Established in 2017 via a contribution from Acta Materialia and its Board of Governors to support materials science education.
- David J. Chellman Scholarship — One award of $2,500. Created in 2014 by Arline Denny in honor of David James Chellman, long-time Senior Technical Fellow at Lockheed Martin and devoted ASM volunteer. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated financial need.
- ASM Outstanding Scholars Awards — Three merit-based awards of $2,000 each to recognize exceptional academic achievement. These awards are open to international students and do not consider financial need.
- Edward J. Dulis Scholarship — One award of $1,500. Established in 2003 by the family of Edward J. Dulis, an ASM fellow.
- John M. Haniak Scholarship — One award of $1,500. Established in 2003 by the family of John Myron Haniak, a lifelong ASM member. Eligibility requires Pennsylvania residency and/or attendance at a Pennsylvania college or university.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must satisfy all of the following:
- Be a member of ASM International or a Material Advantage student member.
- Have a declared or intended major in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Students in related science or engineering disciplines may be considered if they show a substantial academic focus and interest in materials science.
- Have completed at least one year of college-level study.
- Be enrolled in a university with an accredited science or engineering program that leads to a bachelor’s degree.

Application Instructions
To be considered, complete the online application and submit all supporting documents by February 28. Email supporting materials to ScholarshipsUG@asminternational.org. Required documents:
- Official or unofficial transcript
- Current resume
- Recent photograph
- Two letters of recommendation (at least one must come from a professor or from a supervisor at a co-op, internship, or work-study position)

Selection Process
The ASM Action in Education Committee reviews applications. Awards are intended to encourage students with demonstrated potential and interest in metallurgy/materials engineering and related careers. The selection committee evaluates applications using the application materials, transcript, personal statement, and recommendations. Primary evaluation factors include:
- Academic Achievement: GPA, coursework, and breadth of interdisciplinary skills
- Interest in the Field: Knowledge of metallurgy/materials engineering, participation in related activities or work, and career potential
- Personal Qualities: Motivation, maturity, social values, and career goals

Financial need is required for all ASM undergraduate scholarships awarded to students studying in North America, with the following exception: ASM Outstanding Scholar Awards are merit-based, open to international applicants, and do not consider financial need.

Additional Terms & Important Dates
- Each scholarship covers one academic year. Recipients must reapply if they wish to be considered in subsequent years. No student may receive more than two consecutive scholarship awards.
- Multiple students from the same institution may apply.
- Colleges and universities are requested not to reduce other institutional financial support for students who receive an ASM scholarship.
- Applicants will be considered for every scholarship for which they meet the criteria.
- Submit all application materials together by the deadline: February 28.
- All applicants will be notified after committee review. Award recipients will be informed by email no later than May 31.
